In recent years, some prominent voices on the right have said that the free market cannot be absolute, and that economic policy must serve the general welfare of the nation. This has invigorated spirited debates between advocates for the traditional conservative agenda of smaller government, lower taxes, deregulation, and free trade on one hand and advocates for a new conservative agenda that would restrict trade and immigration, implement industrial and family policy, and regulate finance and technology on the other.
